GOV OKPEBHOLO TAPS INTO $7BN ANNUAL DIASPORA REMITTANCES FOR DEVELOPMENT OF EDO STATE
Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo’s administration is poised to usher in a new era of diaspora engagement and empowerment, employing a transformative policy framework through the Edo State Diaspora Agency.
This initiative underscores the administration’s firm commitment to strengthening its ties with Edo indigenes across the globe, not only by optimizing diaspora remittances for sustainable economic growth but also by projecting a strong, unified, and forward-thinking image for the state.
In a press release (No. 138/EDSGH/2025) issued by Mr. Fred Itua, the administration stressed that the welfare of every Edo citizen, at home or abroad, is its highest priority.
Moving beyond financial transactions, Governor Okpebholo’s team is addressing the complex challenges diaspora members face, particularly the mental health struggles stemming from difficult and sometimes hazardous migration journeys. The administration is determined to provide both financial aid and compassionate care — affirming the dignity and worth of every citizen — reflecting a significant policy shift from simply viewing diaspora members as a funding stream, to honoring them as key stakeholders in the state’s future.
Furthermore, the administration is poised to maximize the immense economic potential that diaspora remittances bring, a financial lifeline for many families and for the state’s overall prosperity. Currently, Edo contributes $7 billion annual diaspora remittances nearly a third of the total for Nigeria, a fact that underscores its significance for financial stability and growth.
To aid this process, Governor Okpebholo’s administration is developing innovative mechanisms to enable a more systematic, secure, and investment-oriented flow of diaspora remittances. This will be supported by extensive infrastructure improvements, policy reforms, and a more responsive and trustworthy governance framework — turning these financial flows into a powerful engine for sustained, broadly shared progress.
Additionally, the administration plans to elevate Edo’s profile on the international stage by strengthening its diaspora networks, empowering passionate individuals as liaisons, and developing a state-of-the-art online platform. This platform will enable diaspora members to register, connect, and enjoy incentives — from money transfer rebates to potential tax breaks for choosing to invest back home.
A central feature of the policy is its community-centric approach. Local communities will identify their most urgent needs, and diaspora members will be encouraged to collaborate directly in funding projects that address these priorities, fostering a powerful, collective transformation.
Furthermore, the administration is addressing the root causes of irregular migration through education, awareness campaigns, and policy innovations. The diaspora agency, under the leadership of Dr. Loretta Ogboro-Okor, plans to collaborate with broadcast media to produce the Echoes from the Diaspora series, a platform for sharing the real stories of irregular migrants. This will help dispel misconceptions and enable vulnerable youth to make well-informed choices about their futures. Additionally, outreach initiatives will be implemented in secondary schools and universities to provide accurate information and empower the state’s youth.
This policy underlines Governor Okpebholo’s understanding that diaspora remittances are more than just financial flows, they represent a powerful opportunity for transformation, renewal, and sustainable development. His administration is poised to translate this opportunity into a permanent institution that will foster unity, progress, and shared prosperity for future generations.
As Dr. Ogboro-Okor stated, “this is a work in progress that will outlive our children’s children”, a testament to the unity, loyalty, and collective spirit that will drive the state forward.
With purposeful leadership, forward-thinking policy, and the collective will of its diaspora, Edo State stands on the cusp of a new era — a future forged by its people, at home and abroad.
