753 Abuja Duplexes: Court Grants Emefiele ₦2 Billion Bail.
Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Monday granted bail in the sum of ₦2 billion to former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
Emefiele was arraigned on an eight-count charge, including unlawful acquisition of a 753-unit housing estate and allegedly retaining and diverting billions of naira through proxy accounts.
In delivering his ruling, Justice Yusuf stressed that Emefiele had previously been released on bail in other criminal cases and there was no credible evidence suggesting he had jumped bail in those cases.
He therefore admitted Emefiele to bail with the condition that he produce two sureties, each owning property valued at least at ₦2 billion, located in Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2, within the FCT’s jurisdiction.
Justice Yusuf further ordered Emefiele to submit his travel documents to the court and directed him to fulfill these bail conditions by Wednesday, failing which he would be remanded in custody.
The ruling was made following a bail application by Emefiele’s counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), which was not opposed by the prosecuting lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), who instead asked the court to consider adding additional conditions different from those previously set by other courts.
